If you are planning to apply a powder coating to metal claddings or construction equipment components, chances are the type of coating is going to be polyester. A polyester powder coating is very popular in providing protection for a number of metal parts. Fabricators have available several types from which to choose. Each type has its preferential users. Each kind of polyester coating has properties that make it suitable for specific types of applications.
Three Basic types of Polyester Powder Coatings
Polyester powder coatings are available in several different types or compositions. Among the most common are the following three:
1. Polyester Triglycidyl Isocyanurate (TGIC): Polyester TGIC currently remains the most popular polyester resin in the United States. Cured with the low molecular weight, multifunctional crosslinker triglycidyl isocyanurate, this form of polyester is an excellent weather-resistant coating. While providing superior coverage to the sharp edges of a product, this polyester coating also imbues parts with the ability to allow easy adherence and maintenance of high quality mechanical properties even if the films are applied at thicker layers.
2. Polyester TGIC-Free: This type of polyester powder coating exceeds all others in sales in the European market. Its preference is partly because it does not contain the mutagen TGIC. TGIC-free polyester is also easily applied. Supporters point to its cost-saving benefits through its fast and efficient transfer as well as leveling properties, a smooth finish and improved mechanical performance.
1. Polyester/isocyanate: Polyurethane is another name for this TGIC-free coating. It is popular for exterior use because of its superior level of chemical resistance.
Polyester Powder Coating
Polyester powder coatings account for more than 60% of the American market for powder coatings. While polyester TGIC is the choice of most Americans, Europeans prefer the less toxic polyester TGIC-free. Each type has its advantages and disadvantages.
