For an individual, deciding when and if to correct their vision through Lasik Surgery in Oahu is an important decision. First, however, one must understand what the surgery entails. Below is what one can expect when undergoing Lasik eye surgery.

Lasik Defined

Lasik stands for “Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileuses”. It is the most commonly performed eye surgery needed to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. The procedure reshapes the eye’s cornea to allow light entering the eye to be properly focused on the retina for a more clear vision.

Lasik is pain-free and is typically completed in a total of about 15 minutes for both of the eyes, and a high rate of noticeable results within 24 hours.

What the Surgery Entails

Once the decision has been made to undergo the Lasik procedure, the individual’s eye doctor should explain what the procedure entails to ensure the individual will feel confident in his or her decision. Following is the basic procedure of how Lasik eye surgery is performed.

The first step of the procedure is to create a thin, circular flap in the eye’s cornea by using a microkeratome surgical tool.

  • Following the flap, the eye surgeon will then fold back the flap to access the stroma (underlying cornea) and removes a portion of the corneal tissue with an excimer laser. The laser uses an ultraviolet light beam to remove microscopic amounts of tissue, to reshape the cornea for a more accurate focus on the light which is used to improve vision.
  • Once the laser reshapes the cornea, the flap is then laid back into place, covering where the corneal tissue once was. The cornea is allowed to heal naturally rather than by stitches or bandages.
  • Following surgery, the eyesight should stabilize and continue to improve within a few short days. The day after surgery, the individual will have a followup appointment with their eye doctor or surgeon to verify the surgery was successful and to address any concerns or questions the individual may have.
