Chain slings are highly suitable for lifting heavy loads. The can be used in various industrial applications. A chain sling is strong, temperature resistance and flexible, enabling them to be for a range of load conditions regardless of the environment – of course proper safety precautions should be followed at all times to ensure all conditions are proper for the lift. The selection of chain slings available includes the single, double and multi leg sling. Sizes and styles vary with these chain sling products.
Single Leg
With the single leg chain sling, a single chain length supports the load. Even load distribution is required. Some single chain slings include mater links that support sling grab hooks, sling hooks and foundry hooks. Other chain slings support an endless basket configuration, and still others are adjustable. The grade 80 chains that come with these slings have links sizes as large as 1-1/4”. Grade 100 chains have 7/8” thick links. The weight capacities of these chain slings are very significant – some are rated for as much as 70,000 pounds.
Double Leg
As the name implies, the double leg sling consists of two individual lengths of chain that provide support to the lifted object. Again there are a variety of choices available with the double leg version, including those with master links and a sling hook, grab hook or foundry hook. These slings can come as adjustable unites or with a double endless basket. Weight capacities of the double leg sling can reach in excess of 100,000 pounds among the strongest models. These slings also come in grade 80 and grade 100 chain with 7/8” and 1-1/4 link sizes respectively.
Multi Leg
When you require superior lifting power for loads in excess of 180,000 pounds (when properly configured), then a multi-leg sling is an ideal choice. Equipped with 3, 4 or more chains, these configurations are useful for heavy lifting applications. The grades available are the same as the single and double leg versions (80 and 100).
As always, before using any type of chain sling configuration, be 100% sure of the intended use and the allowable lifting capacity.
