It’s a conveyor. It’s supposed to convey, but maybe the equipment is older than most of your warehouse workers. Whether you have owned it straight through, inherited it, or bought it from a used equipment dealer, you need to make sure it can do the job. As heavily used as these kinds of equipment are, you could need to do anything from replacing a few rollers to a complete refurbishment. The payoff for the expenditure of time and money is having a nearly new conveyor system that will run for years and years.
Light to Heavy
Using conveyors saves a lot of time and effort moving materials around a warehouse of supply depot, and saves wear and tear on the staff, too. However, there’s not just one roller for the job. Materials for rollers vary from lightweight nylon all the way up to heavy duty stainless conveyor roller that can convey a truck engine safely to the loading area. There are a few things that you need to know, especially when working with older conveyors – believe it or not, there are some out there still using wooden rollers.
-
Internal, self-lubricating bearings. Even if you have older rollers that require external lubrication, replacing them with self-lubricating bearings in nylon, ceramic, or steel will cut down on man-hours spent doing maintenance. Self lubricating bearings have a consistent level of lubrication that doesn’t need manual greasing, lasts longer, and allows for more even distribution of lubricant.
-
Choose the right material. From nylon to PVC, to stainless steel, it’s important to determine the loads that your conveyors will be handling. Overloading could break the roller, or cause them to wear unevenly, leading to stops and even the materials leaving the conveyor and causing injury. You may want a stainless conveyor roller designed for heavy loads.
Consult a Professional
You may need to build custom rollers, but that shouldn’t put you of renovating your older equipment. Custom solutions don’t have to cost a huge amount of money, and your older equipment can run like new.
