Moving long distances can take several days to a few weeks to complete. Although a reputable Long Distance Moving Company will do their best to take good care of your belongings, it is critical that you do several things to minimize the risk of damage. Here are a few tips for protecting your properly during a long distance move.

Secure Packing

The first thing you should do is pack your items securely. This is a simple step, but one that is often overlooked in the rush to get the task of moving completed. Wrap breakables in newspaper and packing peanuts to cushion them against impacts. Be certain to mark the box “Fragile” to give the movers a heads up that they should be extra careful when loading onto and unloading off of the truck. Make sure the boxes you use are sturdy and use duct tape to help secure weak areas.

Cover Furniture

To avoid getting scuff marks on tables and chairs, cover the furniture with blankets or bubble wrap. Most heavy furniture can withstand a long distance move. However, it may get banged up in the process if you don’t cover it up. You can use regular household blankets. If you’re planning to move multiple times, you may want to invest in heavy duty furniture covers. These can usually be purchased at brand name stores or at online retailers.

Get Insurance

No matter how careful the Long Distance Moving Company is, damage to your possessions may still occur. It’s important that you purchase moving insurance to cover this possibility. If something is damaged because of something the moving company did, the insurance will reimburse you for the item. Insurance will also protect your belonging if they are lost or stolen. For example, the truck could be involved in an accident that sends your furniture scattering across the highway. No matter how unlikely you think a situation like that is, it’s better to be safe than sorry, and insure your belongings.

You spent years collecting your belongings. Just take a little extra time to ensure they arrive at your new home safe and sound.
