One of the most crucial aspects of engaging video conferencing is making sure that your video conferencing lighting rig is performing as it should. Proper lighting is often the difference between clear and professional-looking video quality and muddy, obscure video quality.

Temperature Control at Your Fingertips

Two of the most common types of video conferencing lighting are ring lights and cube lights. The difference between them is right in the name: cubes tend to array LEDs in a cubic or rectilinear pattern, while ring lights position them in a ring. Each have their virtues, with cube lights being well suited for casting a wide range of light across multiple subjects, while ring lights are ideal for single person video capture.

Perhaps more important than shape is the ability to adjust the color temperature of the LEDs in your lighting. Different rooms will have different ambient lighting scenarios that may require you to adjust the LEDs to offer a cool white light, a warm yellow light, or somewhere in between to reach the optimal video quality.

How Many Do You Need?

The question of how much video conferencing lighting you need is really one of scale. If you’re lighting an entire conference room full of people, then you’ll probably want at least two large cube lights for mounting at the front of the room, and possibly more for high angle lighting. If you’re conferencing solo, it’s still worth investing in at least two lights so that you have one key light and one secondary light hitting your face from different directions, to eliminate harsh shadows.
