The right tools can simplify your life. So if you haven’t got enough outlets around in your RV or if reach is an issue, using an extension cord can be a whole lot of help. Here’s what you should look for before you shell out the money for one:

Environment

Smaller cords and power splitters can help a lot, and you can probably make do with them, but they won’t be able to support high-power items in your RV. So, while it’s wise to keep smaller cords on hand, make sure you add have heavy duty ones as well. Go with an outdoor rated one as well. You’re traveling most of the time, and sooner or later, you’ll encounter a bit of rain. You wouldn’t want to end up getting in trouble if you only have small cords handy. With heavy-duty cords, you’ll be prepared for anything on the road, rain or shine.

Plug Type

Decide on a three-prong or two-prong cord. A good bit of advice is to make up a list of the gadgets or tools you’ll need and match that with your plug type.

Power Rating

Devices like hair dryers, microwaves or AC units need a lot of power. So it’s not safe to plug those into your extension cord at all, unless it’s been rated safe for use. Check out the safety listing to make sure what applications you can use it for. Always ensure that your extension cord can take on the power requirements of your devices.

Length

Only get the length you need. So long as they’re fit for the purpose you have in mind, then the shorter they are, the better. Long cords can trip you up if you aren’t careful. And they big ones don’t automatically mean the cords have the right capacity to take on more amperage. So choose wisely.
