A casino is a place where people come to spend money in the hope of winning more and winning big. They play slot machines, roulette, blackjack, craps, and other table games with the idea of striking it rich and having a great time. Most of the time, as we well know, we don’t strike it rich, but we do tend to enjoy our evening as long as we gamble responsibly. Casinos tend to stay open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, so one might wonder how on earth they manage to decorate and change their carpets without closing and losing thousands of dollars.

The word ‘casino’ comes from the Italian, and Spanish for ‘house’ and refers more to a small country cottage on a large estate, like a summerhouse. The word was adopted during the nineteenth century when public areas and buildings that included fun activities were known as ‘little houses’, such as ‘little house of fun’. Gambling dens and clubs sprang up and they included various forms of entertainment, including theater productions, musicals and lounge act singers.

A Short History

Gambling is not a new pastime and actually dates way back to around 2300 B.C. when the Chinese began the practice, but it has also long been considered as a pastime that could have dated back even further. In the United States saloons were the first ‘gambling houses’ where people played cards, tried games of chance and shot each other for cheating. Later, it was four major cities that first influenced the gambling lifestyle when people flocked to San Francisco, New Orleans, Chicago and St. Louis where the most popular saloons were and were the most densely populous gambling areas were.

Modern casinos stay open all hours and when it comes to changing the interior décor they have to be quick. It’s a kind of in and out process where they close for a very short period of time and the work force run in to start. Carpeting in Reno, NV casinos is done very quickly, by a large team so that the machines and tables can be put back as quick as possible. The rest of the décor is also completed as fast as possible, but most casinos only remodel every few years.
