If you have ever passed a shopping center and noticed a painted (yet peeling) metal roof, you may think of it as an eyesore. Unfortunately, if the welding metal fabrication project isn’t handled properly when the roof is installed, the paint may not last.

The fact is, painting metal surfaces can be quite tricky. As a result, it makes sense that you would need to understand what options are available to choose something that is going to work to begin with and something that is going to last. The best way to do this is to get to better know your metal.

Metal Characteristics

When you begin any type of welding metal fabrication you are going to have a general idea about the characteristics of the metal that should be used. However, these characteristics will also influence the way the paint adheres to the surface. The iron that is present in ferrous metals can result in corrosion and areas of rust, which may affect the finish that is applied.

Preventing Issues

One of the best ways to prevent rust from developing is to apply a rust inhibitor before painting. This will provide a barrier that will help to prime and protect the ferrous metal surfaces. You can find rust inhibiting primers in both oil and water based formulas. While it is virtually impossible to prevent all the vapor and water from reaching the metal surface, the rush inhibitor will help to reduce the moisture that causes corrosion significantly.

Keep in mind, in addition to using the proper primer, you need to clean the metals thoroughly after the welding metal fabrication process is completely. If you fail to do this, it may be another reason that paint does not adhere properly to the surface. If you are unsure, ask your fabricator for additional painting tips.
